WHATS SO BAD ABOUT THE JEWISH PRESS

Really what is wrong with it. I have heard from people that its worse than the daily news. Maybe its those people all supporting the Hamodia and Mishpacha that dont like it. What could be so wrong. Is it the fact that the headlines arent good enough? The headlines arent that good because its always about Israel and there aint that much to write about Israel (OLMERT DOES SOMETHING STUPID AGAIN).

So the headlines arent good is that a reason to say its worse than the daily news. It has some nice articles including the Inquiring photographer which asks people unimportant questions. The Rebbetzin has an article which is talking about the stupidity of visiting day in camps. The funny thing about this article is the people who write in things proving or disaaproving thats its stupid or a stupid question. One guy writes why worry about camp visiting day when there are kassams falling in sderot and the economy is colappsing. To that guy youre an idiot. I'm very sure you fought with someone in shul about opening or closing a window and thats extremely important (sarcasm) . Then there was a Grandmother who was saying that many years ago she had the same problem. The she was complaining more that she had to support her children who were married than about camp visiting day (dont know how that came in).

Ok maybe the last few parts werent that good about the Jewish Press. Well Then there are those psychologist columns that talk about how to handle youre child and many times those are helpful. A lot of cooking columns too. Those two shidduch two articles that talk about some serious issues but are not helping anybody get married. Then theres that Baseball one which is maybe the reason all the yeshivish people dont like the JP. Arnold Fine has a whole page article which I like but read only once in a while.

So there nothing good about the JP but its still better than the Hamodia or Mishpacha.

I used to like to read the Jewish Press, I would read Dr. Yael Respler's part. Then some people started saying that she makes up the questions, and people don't really ask it, and I started questioning everything I read. Then I watched her video "Chutzpah is muktzah" It wasn't very professional, sounded very line by line kinda thing, so I stopped reading her collum.

I know R' Goldwasser writes in the Jewish Press, and he's great, so that would be one thing I would recommend the Jewish press for.

Now for the answer of why people don't like it, is because the ultra frum people don't like how its too open, like that letter from Dov Hikind about child molesters, the Yatend or Hamodia would never put in such a thing, for fear that children will read it, and its not good for them to read such a thing. So the jewish press puts in a lot of controversial stuff, that you have to be very open to read such a paper.

They really should ban newspapers. It's nothing but loshon hora, chilul hashem, and many other bad things. In fact, it's the newspapers that are causing the shidduch crisis, the divorce crisis and the reason kids go off the derech.

"Yatend or Hamodia would never put in such a thing, for fear that children will read it"

this has nothing to do with why Y and H won't print controversial stuff like sex abuse. they don't print it because they deny rhwaw problems exist altogether. printing hikind's letter would be a public admission that the gedolim are wrong.

moshe: not every newspaper is about news and its very useful

dude, you do realize it was joke, right?

What I love most about the Jewish press is that it makes me feel stupid.

I read an article one week that I feel is really well written and coherent. Next thing I know, the next week bam! Someone writes an attack on the first article, tearing it to shreds. So then I think that the second article is pretty logical, and then bam! The cycle repeats itself.

I'm trying to figure out if the Jewish Press just prints illogical articles, or if some people live to nitpick.

ENDOFWORLD:

it's called different people having different opinions. i know it seems strange and alien in the jewish press, but open debate is actually pretty common among non-jews. (maybe this is why frum people won't read the jewish press and instead prefer hamodia and yated?)

Lion of Zion said...

(yeah, yeah, i know not everything is open to debate in JP also)

i think that some people dont like the jewish press because they actually have pictures of women in it.

frum single female said...

i actually find the jewish press very campy and enjoy reading it.

FRUM SINGLE FEMALE:

it's a good thing for the JP then. otherwise we might not know what women look like.

Never did like reading Dr. Yael. Dont know why.

Lion O zion

What about Hikinds letter Wait he had a letter? Wow! I am really behind.

End O World

Lion O Zion is correct people have different opinions. Many times they dont express their opinions the right way and end off writing there own nonsense that sort of does and does not have to do with the topic. I find the last one a lot in the JP.

Frum Single Female

I "forgot" that part.

Lion Of Zion: How does it show that Gedolim are wrong? Because of the Rosh Yeshiva that don't fire these Rabbi's? Your right that would show negatively on them. But I would truly hope that they aren't trying to hide anything by not printing it.

I think its more like this, you can have one magazine that reviews books, and another that reviews movies. Now the book magazine won't start publishing reviews about movies because its just not what the magazine is about.

So same here, the Yated and Hamodia just never signed up to write about such things. They decided to not write about controversial stuff. Since they have never done it before, then I wouldn't judge based on this one incident, where it may seem they are hiding things.

Mike In Midwood: Yea, he wrote a letter, it was on VIN. Hikind Letter

Mikeinmidwood said...

I have read the hikind letter (thanks for the link babysitter) and im wondering why the homodia or yated didnt put it in or mention about the hikind letter.

Jewish Side of Babysitter said...

MikeInMidwood: Your welcome. yea, I see it as something important that should be fixed. However, I still think its not tznius for them to publish it in the Yated Or Hamodia, for children to see and get curious about.

As I have read you can cover things up from children or tell them the truth which maybe a better answer Since they should know so they can protect themselves I really dont want to get into this matter so I finish with this. We cant hide the facts its there so dont try to cover up (aimed at homodia and yated).

Mikeinmidwood said...

Okay the last one didnt make so much sense but if you read carefully youll see that its two different covering up one on covering from children one covering up from the public.

MikeInMidwood: Your right.

I'm all for educating our children about this. Unfortunately, the problem is pretty prevalent these days.

I had to take a workshop on child abuse, and the guy who gave it was pretty (creepy and) interesting. He mentioned how sometimes schools bring him (ie, a representative of the Shalom Task Force) to talk to kids. There are ways to get the message across in a very aidel way.

In any case, they're going to hear about it from their friends (yes, they will. Most of us, with some very few exceptions, learned about the Facts Of Life from our fellow little pishers). Which is why it's a good idea to educate them before they get "educated"

End of World: That's true. I think I'm going to write a post about it some time. I'll add it to my list.

Ps-Woohoo! I made it to the survey. Break out the champagne.

End Of World: that's because it is probably the reason why he made the poll, with your blog in mind, its amazing.

The JP is not too bad.

I'm a practical person and it has its uses.

I found 2 jobs via their classifieds.

EndOfWorld said...

Babysitter: Thank! That was so nice of you.

Jacob: Hahha. Sometimes, on really frustrating days, when my tuition bills are piling up, I like to open to the help wanted section just to gloat about how many people want certified teacher like me

Shes right

MikeInMidwood: thanx, it feels good to be right, and lately I seem to be on a "right" streak.

I just came home from a VERY mainstream camp. We had a discussion Friday night if Ignorance is Bliss. Well it wasn't much of a disscussion. I said my piece, they said theirs. Apparently it is bliss, and therefore the Jewish Press and Dov Hikinds letter do not exist.

sopardic intelligence: In a way its true, I know for me I sometimes don't want to deal with the reality of the dangers that might happen. I'm going to write about that soon.

EndOfWorld said...

Believe me, when it's people you care about, like your own kids or your students etc, you very well want to make sure that they arent ignorant of the dangers. Again, there are very aidel ways of doing it...Not so hard, think about it.

Let's hear it for the JP for bringing us Gershon Tannenbaum's weekly Chassidishe propaganda column !

The JP is going down, circulation down, less pages (or is it just on a diet?), they are feeling the heat from the competition these days.
